C
abrasion, chipping, or cracking of the coating. If significant corrosion damage is
observed, the components will be replaced or repaired.
4.1.12 Fill Settlement
Refuse settlement will be minimized at the site through the use of standard compaction
practices in all fill areas. However, settlement will still occur due to decomposition of the
refuse. The GCCS components will be designed and installed with several features to
account for this settlement including:
• Installation of a slip joint in the well pipe, allowing the well to respond to
settlement.
• Flexible membrane boots installed around the LFG extraction wells in areas
where a flexible membrane liner is utilized in the landfill final cover design.
The boot allows for a flexible connection and seal of the landfill cover
membrane axouncl the LFG extract. well csin. Tis ponnton can be
adjusted as the area around the LFG extraction well casing settles.
• LFG extraction wellheads connected to the LFG transmission piping via a
flexible pipe or hose connection. This allows the LFG piping to accommodate
changes in the position of the LFG transmission piping or LFG extraction well
without failing.
• LFG transmission piping will be sloped at sufficient grades so that reasonable
amounts of differential settlement may occur without significant disruption to
LFG flow by liquid accumulation.
4.1.13 Resistance to Refuse Decomposition Heat
Resistance of the GCCS to the heat generated as a result of refuse decomposition will be
achieved through the use of materials tested and proven to withstand temperatures
normally found in landfills. The GCCS will be inspected during routine monitoring for
heat damage. If heat damage of the GCCS components is observed and is believed to be
detrimental to the operation of the GCCS, the cause of the elevated landfill temperature
will be investigated and the GCCS will be adjusted or modified in accordance with HSPS
requirements to mitigate the effects of the elevated temperatures.
4.2 Compliance with §60.759(a)(2)
§60.759(a)(2) The sufficient density of gas collection devices determined
in paragraph (a)(1) of this section shall address landfill gas migration
issues and augmentation of the collection system through the use of active
or passive systems at the landfill perimeter or exterior.
Foothill Sanitary Landfill 9 Public Works/Solid Waste
LFG CS Design Pian County of San Joaquin - March 10, 2005
