Damages/final disposition items must be processed daily and this program must be used to
evaluate anything you need to dispose of at the store level . Follow the " Recognizing Waste"
procedures outlined in the Front Store training course for additional detail .
Once you have determined that a waste item is hazardous , by following the " Identifying
Hazardous Waste " procedures in the Front Store training , place the waste item in its own ,
self- sealing hazardous waste bag . The hazardous waste bags are specifically designed to •
be used as a " container , " while the hazardous waste collection container provides
secondary containment . Bags are also meant to keep different materials separate ,
therefore , only one Front Store item may be collected in each bag . This step is critical to
make sure that incompatible items (such as ammonia and bleach ) do not mix . Stores may
not use plastic bags from CVS Pharmacy shelves or any other bags for hazardous waste .
I
To properly manage hazardous waste , follow the steps below :
Step Action
1 Place the entire waste item , including all packaging , into a self- sealing hazardous waste
bag . Remember : Only one item per bag .
2 If the item is leaking , follow the " Handling Leaking Hazardous Waste " described in the
Front Store training course .
3 Close the self-sealing bag completely .
• Double - check seal to be certain the bag is closed .
4 If the item' s label is not legible , write the product name on the outside of the bag with a
black permanent marker.
5 Place bagged waste item carefully into the appropriate labeled hazardous waste
collection container. Due to chemical properties of the hazardous waste items ,
mishandling these items could cause an accident or injury . Place larger, heavier items
at the bottom of the container if possible .
6 Ensure the " STORE" or " PHARMACY" Hazardous Waste label is placed on the outside
of the hazardous waste collection container . Additional labels may be required
depending on state requirements . Refer to the State Specific Requirements Section of
your EH &S Program Binder .
REG VE ®
Environmental 13
r .opharmacy Health & Safety APR ® 1 2019
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
DEPARTMENT
