In general, the study approach will include the following:
1. Determine the top elevation of the ground water relative to the
ground level and bottom of leaching trenches throughout the study
area.
2. Determine source of high ground water.
3. Sample wells for pollution, contamination and possible toxic
contamination of the ground water.
4. Based on 1-3 above determine effect of sewage treatment and disposal
by septic tank treatment and leaching line disposal.
5. If appropriate, develop methods of improving the ground water quality
through management practices that will result in meeting established
ground water quality goals and protect the public health.
6. Prepare cost estimates for alternative plans.
7. Prepare a financial plan and recommended work schedule for
protecting the area's ground water, provide improved sewage
treatment and disposal, and provide a safe water supply for local
residents.
B. Statement of the Problem
It is believed that the Santos Ranch/Currier Estates area is under laid
with ground water that is to near the surface for providing adequate
treatment and disinfection. In addition, the ground water pumped from
the aquifer has very high concentration Nitrate (NOO and total disolved
solids. In additon, biological contamination is suspected.
The nitrate levels measured at concentrations of 69 to 90 mg/1 may be
due to natural conditions, agricultural fertilization, recycled wastewater
or other unknown sources. The high total disolved solids, 1000 to
1500+mg/l is probably due to some extent to natural conditions and may
be aggravated by recycling of sewage effluent.
If the problem is not addressed, conditions may become more adverse
to public health or become progressively worse to the extent that the
drinking water aquifer is lost for a period of time. It is thought that
most of the study area is so effected, down gradient lands and ground
water off site are probably also effected to a lesser extent.
-3-
