There must be coordination with the plumber to bring the influent line to the proper location and
elevation in relation to the septic tank location and elevation. The septic system contractor must
connect the system to the plumber's piping and install the disposal area under EHD guidelines.
The landscaper must work with, and around the location of the tanks and disposal areas.
It is imperative to recognize that all septic systems have a lifespan. This lifespan is dependant on
several factors and is therefore difficult to determine. Three critical lifespan issues are: Limiting water
use throughout the future homes as much as possible. Restricting water use also includes checking for
water leaks in toilets, faucets, etc. on a regular basis. The second factor in extending the lifespan of
each system is not installing garbage disposals in kitchen sinks. Waste food products must be handled
as solid waste. Garbage disposals can increase the organic loading in the effluent leading to
substantial biomat formation. Thirdly, water softeners should also not be installed in the subdivision
because the sodium from water softeners will bind the clay soil and impede permeability.
In unsewered areas and/or areas that have been, or currently are under agricultural production, it is
highly recommended that bottled water be used for drinking and cooking purposes.
-12-
Chesney Consulting
