When storing hazardous wastes, it is important that the waste is not placed
in containers made of materials that could pose compatibility issues like
those mentioned above. For example do not place acids in metal drums
because the acid will corrode the container and cause a leak.
Note: When in doubt consult the material's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) to
identify chemical properties and hazard warnings.
3.5.3. Container Management
The following are requirements for hazardous waste containers
(as illustrated in Figure 3.5):
• Containers must be compatible with the waste in them.
• Containers must be kept closed except when waste is actually being added.
• Containers must not be leaking, bulging, rusting, damaged,or dented.
• Store liquid waste containers on secondary containment pallets.
• LQG Only: Containers holding ignitable or reactive wastes must be
placed at least 15m (50ft) from the facility's property line and
incompatible wastes must be separated by a berm or wall
Wastes
Separated by Closed
} Compatib.ilityl'
F Containers in
. .0 .,
Good Condli io
2
VY
econdary
Containment
Figure 3.5 Hazardous Waste Container Requirements
CGA 15 AMY 2D15
