At the beginning of each survey, background radiation will be measured using each instrument <br />that will be used to conduct subsequent surveys. Background radiation will be measured on <br />�- relatively flat, open areas underlain by native soils or bedrock. The background radiation <br />reading will be recorded for each instrument, and used during waste/bum ash surveys for <br />comparison. <br />The active work area will be surveyed for radioactivity at least one time prior to start of work. <br />The CIWMB may increase the survey based on the amount and type of recovered radioactive <br />debris. Each survey will be performed by slowly walking back and forth over the proposed work <br />area with an approved radiation survey instrument. If elevated radiation is detected prior to the <br />start of work, the "hot' area will be flagged in the field and excluded from the work zone until it <br />can be better characterized. <br />In addition to field radiation surveys, each soil sample will be scanned for radioactivity using an <br />approved survey instrument prior to being shipped to the laboratory. Under no circumstance will <br />a soil sample be shipped if it contains elevated radiation.
