Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan
The Home Depot Store#6660
4 Waste Storage Areas
4.1 Hazardous Wastes Generated at the Site
The Store is a retail location selling consumer products. The types of hazardous wastes generated at the Store
are typically returned, spilled, or damaged products, and can include the following:
• Fertilizers with pesticides;
• Flammable liquids;
• Toxic solids;
• Toxic liquids;
• Aerosols; and,
• Alkaline/corrosive liquids.
The Store has two hazardous waste Satellite Accumulation areas. One is located in the Garden Center and the
other is located in the TRC. The Garden Center has a 5-gallon red waste bucket that is emptied into a drum in the
HHM CSA. The hazardous waste streams generated in the TRC are also emptied in the HHM CSA. There are
various buckets for waste in the TRC. Wastes are stored in the 90-day HHM CSA located in the Receiving Area
(Figure 2).
The HHM CSA is a labeled and designated concrete-floored space. Waste is contained in buckets and drums
ranging from 1-gallon to 30-gallons. Appendix A lists the HHM CSA inventory and typical wastes stored. There
are no floor drains located in these areas. The total quantity of waste stored varies with incidents of spills so
there is no set generation rate.
Fire extinguishers and a spill kit are located near the HHM CSA(Figure 2). Associates in the area use cell
phones or the public address (PA) system for communication. Emergency response equipment information is
provided in Section 7.
The HHM CSA is inspected at least weekly by the Emergency Coordinator, or designee, and recorded in an
internal electronic database. During the inspections, the Emergency Coordinator, or designee, checks for spills
and leaks, proper signs, adequate aisle spacing, labeling, condition of containers, segregation of incompatibles,
proper storage of ignitable waste, and condition of emergency equipment for the area. Any corrective action
observations are noted. Completed inspection forms are maintained electronically for a minimum of 3 years. A list
of inspection criteria is provided in Appendix B.
www.arcadis.com
7
