The individual conducting the check should check for signs of breathing and movement <br /> and immediately summon assistance if a prisoner appears to be in medical distress. <br /> All juvenile and adult bookings should be logged into the Watch Commander's daily Iog.The <br /> following information should be included in the entry: <br /> (a) Date and time of booking <br /> (b) Charges <br /> (c) Arrestee's name (except for juveniles) <br /> (d) Arresting Officer's name <br /> (e) Date and time of release <br /> Absent life-threatening exigent circumstances, members should not enter the cell of a person of <br /> the opposite sex unless a member of the same sex as the person in custody is present (Penal <br /> Code § 4021). <br /> No individual in custody shall be permitted to supervise, control or exert any authority over other <br /> individuals in custody. <br /> 900.3.3 BOOKING LOG <br /> With regard to prisoner checks, the Watch Commander may choose to delegate the prisoner <br /> checks to a Booking Officer if one is on duty. A Booking Log will be kept in the booking area of <br /> the Temporary Holding Facility for use by the Booking Officer. All prisoner checks and prisoner <br /> status updates conducted in this manner should be entered on the log, including the time of each <br /> event.The log info will be transferred by the Watch Commander into his/her Daily Log, prior to the <br /> end of his/her shift. The Daily Log entry should include the officer's name who made the checks, <br /> (e.g. 1445: Prisoner check by Officer Smith, 201). Once the information from the Booking Log has <br /> been transferred into the W/C Daily Log, the Booking Log may be shredded. <br /> The Watch Commander should make periodic checks to ensure the log and security checks are <br /> being made on time by any assigned Booking Officer. <br /> 900.4 INITIATING TEMPORARY CUSTODY <br /> The officer responsible for an individual in temporary custody should evaluate the person for any <br /> apparent chronic illness, disability, vermin infestation, possible communicable disease as noted <br /> below. The officer should specifically ask if the individual is contemplating suicide and evaluate <br /> him/her for obvious signs or indications of suicidal intent. If there is any suspicion that the individual <br /> may be suicidal, he/she shall be transported to the San Joaquin County Jail or the appropriate <br /> mental health facility. <br /> The officer should promptly notify the Watch Commander of any conditions that may warrant <br /> immediate medical attention or other appropriate action.
