REHS
Elena Manzo, REHS
The San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD) has reviewed the Soil Suitability/Nitrate
Loading (SSNL) Study, dated August 19, 2022 and has the following comments for your consideration.
The SSNL was prepared to determine the suitability of onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) usage
and the potential long-term impact of nitrate to groundwater from the proposed 3 -bedroom Accessory Dwelling
Unit (ADU), BP -2203610, on a 1.98 -acre property that contains an existing single-family residence, with a
septic system, and water well.
Based on the information provided, the EHD can make the following findings:
1. Construction of an individual sewage disposal system(s) under permit and inspection by the
Environmental Health Department is required at the time of development based on the
following requirements (San Joaquin County Development Title, Section 9-1110.3 & 9-
1110.4).
a. Based on the information provided in SSNL study, the EHD finds that the long-term addition of
nitrates added to the site, due to the proposed three-bedroom modular home, will be
acceptable if the amount is mitigated to bring it within the acceptable level of 10 mg/L.
Calculations in the SSNL study indicate an estimated level of 12.1 mg/L of nitrates. In order to
mitigate this excess amount of nitrates, a 2,000 gallon or larger septic tank is to be used.
b. Percolation test conducted on August 2nd. 2022 yielded a percolation rate of 2.1 minutes/inch.
At this rate, a Twenty feet soil separation shall be required between bottom of dispersal field
and groundwater pursuant to San Joaquin County Onsite Wastewater Treatment Standard
table 1.10.2. Per SSNL Study, groundwater on site is reported between 23 and 25 feet below
surface grade.
c. The OWTS and its 100% replacement areas shall meet all required minimum setbacks stated
in San Joaquin County (OWTS) Standard and Well Standard.
If you have any questions please contact Steven Shih, Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist, at
sshih@sjgov.org or (209) 468-9850
Steven Shih, REHS
Program Coordinator
c: Britta & Kevin Golding — PO Box 18019, South Lake Tahoe, CA 95651
1868 E Hazelton Avenue I Stockton, California 95205 1 T 209 468-3420 1 F 209 464-0138 1 www.sjgov.org/ehd
