Geosyntec
consultants
4. FIELD ACTIVITES
4.1 Pre-Field Activities
Prior to the beginning of field activities, the following will be performed:
• Geosyntec will coordinate with Glenn Springs for access to the Site;
• Drilling permits will be obtained from the San Joaquin County Environmental Health
Department;
• A Site-specific task hazard analysis (THA) will be created for the scope of work
described in this Work Plan. The THA will contain procedures for hazard identification
and mitigation, emergency response, including a map of the nearest hospital and
emergency contact information, incident reporting, use of appropriate personal
protective equipment (PPE), and air monitoring procedures, if applicable. The THA
will be available on-Site during all field activities. Prior to the start of field activities, a
safety tailgate meeting will be conducted that will include a discussion of the field
activities to be performed, safe work practices, identification of potential hazards, use
of PPE, decontamination procedures, and emergency response protocols; and
• Drilling locations will be marked with white paint and Underground Services Alert
(USA) will be contacted a minimum of 48 hours prior to commencement of intrusive
subsurface activities. Additionally, a private utility locator will be contracted to
perform a geophysical survey in the vicinity of each proposed boring location area to
identify the presence or absence of potential utilities, pipelines, or other subsurface
obstructions prior to drilling.
The proposed boring locations may be adjusted based on the results of the USA alert, the private
geophysical survey, and the accessibility of locations with respect to obstructions on the property.
4.2 Soil Vapor Probe Installation
Geosyntec will contract a California-licensed C-57 drilling contractor to perform drilling activities
using a DPT drill rig at the locations shown in Figure 3. A total of four soil vapor probes will be
installed at two locations at the Site. Two probes will be installed in adjacent borings at each of
the proposed two locations.
At each location, the drilling contractor will install the deeper probe first. For each soil vapor
probe, the top 5 feet of each borehole will be completed using a hand auger. For the deeper soil
vapor probe locations, the driller will collect a continuous soil core at each boring from
approximately 5 ft bgs to 10 ft bgs. The soil cores will be visually logged by Geosyntec field
personnel under the direction of a California-licensed engineer or geologist for classification of
soil type using the Unified Soil Classification System as guidance. The shallow soil vapor probes
(screened at approximately 5 ft bgs) will be installed adjacent to the deeper probes (screened at
approximately 10 ft bgs). Samples from the soil cuttings and soil cores will be collected and placed
in a sealed plastic bag and allowed to equilibrate. The headspace of the soil core samples will be
field screened for VOCs using a PID and recorded on field logs.
Work Plan for Vapor Intrusion Investigation 6 July 30,2021
