Phelan Development Holly Master Plan - Buildings H & 1
15188.000.006 Geotechnical Exploration
and designated trees, shrubs, and associated roots. Clean and backfill excavations extending
below the planned finished site grades with suitable material compacted to the recommendations
presented in Section 5.7. ENGEO should be retained to observe and test backfilling.
Following clearing, the site should be stripped to remove surface organic materials. Strip organics
from the ground surface to a depth of at least 2 to 3 inches below the surface. Remove strippings
from the site or, if considered suitable by the landscape architect and owner, use them in
landscape fill.
5.4 OVER-OPTIMUM SOIL MOISTURE CONDITIONS
The contractor should anticipate encountering excessively over-optimum (wet) soil moisture
conditions during winter or spring grading, or during or following periods of rain. In addition, wet
soil conditions may be found during sub excavation operations due to shallow groundwater table.
Wet soil can make proper compaction difficult or impossible. Wet soil conditions can be mitigated
by:
1. Frequent spreading and mixing during warm dry weather,
2. Mixing with drier materials,
3. Mixing with a lime or cement product, or
4. Stabilizing with aggregate or geotextile stabilization fabric, or both.
Options 3 and 4 should be evaluated by ENGEO prior to implementation.
5.5 ACCEPTABLE FILL
On-site soil material is suitable for placement as engineered fill material provided it is processed
to remove concentrations of organic material, debris, and particles greater than 8 inches in
maximum dimension.
Imported fill materials should meet the above requirements and have a plasticity index less than
the on-site material. Allow ENGEO to sample and test proposed imported fill materials at least
5 days prior to delivery to the site.
5.6 REUSE OF ON-SITE RECYCLED MATERIALS
If desired to reuse asphaltic or concrete as engineered fill, we recommend that it be ground up
and thoroughly mixed with on-site or import soil. In general, recycled asphalt or concrete should
be ground down to less than 4 inches in greatest dimension, with no more than 25 percent larger
than 2'/2 inches. Recycled material should be thoroughly mixed with a sufficient amount of soil,
such that there is no more than 40 percent by weight of recycled material in the final mix.
5.7 FILL COMPACTION
5.7.1 Grading in Structural Areas
Perform subgrade compaction prior to fill placement, following cutting operations, and in areas
left at grade as follows.
ENGEOPage 114 December 13, 2021
Expect Exceltence
