HONORABLE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
May 5, 1982
Page Three
pH value goes up, the alkalinity of a solution increases;
as the acidity increases, the pH goes down. We refer to
lemons as having an acid taste, and in fact, their pH is
measured at 2. 2 - 2. 4. The pH of ginger ale is measured at
2. 0-4. 0 because of dissolved carbon dioxide gas.
The Forward, Inc. , site is prohibited from receiving
materials less than pH3. The pH of grapefruit that we eat
is 3.
On the alkaline side of the pH scale, the Forward, Inc. ,
site is prohibited from receiving new materials with a pH
higher than 11. The California State Park system has virgin
wilderness soils that are pH 11. The Calgon detergent powder
we use in our dishwasher machines is pH 12. What is hazardous
is not as simplistic as some would have us believe.
A common method of controlling ticks requires treatment
of your pet by washing it with a 0. 5 percent water emulsion
of malathion. To make this solution, you mix 1-1/2 teaspoons
of malathion concentrate (57%) with 5 quarts of water. The
Forward, Inc. , site is prohibited from receiving this wastewater
because it exceeds the concentration limits for pesticides
imposed on the site.
A common pesticide used to combat ground beetles is
FICAM(R) or 2,2-dimethyl 1, 3 benzodioxol-4-01 methylcarbamate,
sold as a 76% wettable powder. It is applied to kill pests
in stores, warehouses, hospitals, restaurants, food processing
plants, nursing homes, and wherever needed. The pesticide
label provides instructions for preparing the chemical for
application at 0. 5% concentration of active ingredient.
That requires the addition of two pounds of chemical to
40 gallons of water and spraying it around the infested
area. The Forward, Inc. , site (Class II-1) is not permitted
to receive this pesticide in the concentrations routinely
used in stores, warehouses, hospitals, restaurants or food
processing plants.
Ordinary Stoddard solvent makes a good herbicide for
controlling crabgrass, broad-leaved weeds and weed grass
found along patios, walkways, and flowerbeds. Stoddard
solvent is prohibited from disposal at the Forward, Inc. ,
site because its flashpoint exceeds the limits set by the
State.
