was constructed as previously described except partition embank-
ments were not included. Each of the ponds one through five are
interconnected by flow pipes which prevent overtopping of embank-
ments and which maintain the perimeter freeboard at the appro-
priate levels.
#3 "Incompatible wastes were combined in trench #3 which
caused a chemical reaction and formed H 2 S toxic gas (see interim
discharge specification 3b)"
RESPONSE
In attempting to clean settled solids from evaporation pond
#1, the drilling mud fraction of the waste was lifted by drag
line and dumped into group 1 waste trench #3 . Almost immediately
following the beginning of this operation it was noted that minor
reactions were taking place in the bottom of waste trench #3 and
an H 2 S gas odor was developing. The cleaning operation involving
the transfer of drilling mud was discontinued immediately.
Analysis of the two wastes were reviewed and the consulting
chemist was advised of the reaction. At this time we have not
resolved exactly what reaction was taking place, however, the
cleaning operation will not continue until we have determined the
cause of the reaction.
#4: "The lack of sidewall liners does not prevent lateral
migration into sand stringers above the lower 7 feet of the
trench walls"
-4-
