5. i •
January 19, 1983
Project 116-1.3
- 2 -
Industrial wastes consisting of wet-solid sludges from FMC Corporation were
accepted for disposal in the Group 1 Trench Landfill Area and were placed
in Trench #3. Trench #3 was filled and covered during the 4th quarter of
1982. Additional cover material was being placed, compacted and graded
over all Group 1 Trenches when we were forced by heavy rain to stop work.
Following completion of Trench #3, we accepted approximately 5 loads of
additional FMC waste. This material was stored in a bermed enclosure near
the north end of Group 1 Trench #2. Further shipments of FMC waste were
not accepted following receipt of your letter of 28, December, 1982.
Evaporation Ponds #1, #2 and #3 were cleaned during the 3rd calendar quarter,
1982. Soil samples were subsequently collected both by Dwight Baier (Baier
Agronomy) and by BETA ASSOCIATES. The results of chemical analyses on these
samples were completed in November, 1982. We are currently working with
Mr. Dennis Wescott of your staff on the interpretation of these analytical
results. A complete report detailing the results of the field and laboratory
investigation will be forwarded to your office when the interpretive work
has been completed.
Subsequent to cleaning and testing of the evaporation ponds listed above,
new pond liners were placed to a thickness of 3.0 feet, compacted to 90%
of maximum density at optimum moisture +2% and tested to determine permeability.
A summary of the test results are attached to this report. Since there are
still unanswered questions regarding chloride ion concentrations in the
soil, we discontinued accepting brine waste from gas wells. Drilling mud
waste however, is being accepted in Evaporation Pond #3. Table 2 below
provides volume data on Group 1 wastes (FMC) and drilling mud waste for
the 4th quarter, 1982.
TABLE 2 - GROUP 1 WASTE, DRILLING MUD, BRINE
F14C Drilling Mud Brine
Month .
