_
February 15, 1983
Project 116-1.4
- 4 -
- Excavate a shallow sump on the up-gradient side of the lateral
berm. Complete the trench drains to the shallow, temporary sump.
(The trench floor is already sloped. to drain toward the sump. )
Since all floor and side-wall liners have been placed and compacted
to specifications, FMC waste could temporarily be placed from the
south end of the trench. When weather conditions permit, the
lateral berm could be removed and the floor drains completed to the
permanent sump.
Rainwater which contacts waste material would collect in the shallow
sump where it could be contained until it was analyzed and subse-
quently removed. Details of the interim trench plan are shown
on Plate 2.
Alternative #2
- Enlarge the embankment enclosure on top of Group 1 Trench #2 alid
place incoming waste within the embankment.
- Leachate formed by precipitation inside the embankment could be
analyzed and reported in accordance with operations requirements
and then transferred to the evaporation pond system.
FMC sludge will be covered by 6 mil. black PVC sheeting to prevent
removal of waste by wind.
In order to implement either of the above alternatives, some drying of site
soils will be necessary to permit equipment access. If the south end of
Trench #4 is used, some rainwater must be removed by pumping.
Solar Evaporation Ponds
Representatives of your staff have been informed of the subsurface investi-
gation and liner inspection conducted in Ponds #1, #2 and #3 by BETA ASSOCIATES
and Baier Agronomy. We are continuing to work with members of your staff
to resolve differences regarding interpretation of chemical analyses of
soil samples. Until this work can be completed, we wish to present the
following information pertaining to repair work and use of the Pond system.
Pond #1, #2 and #3 were thoroughly cleaned of all solid residue to permit
the required liner inspection. Portions of all three pond liners were
removed and the excavated soil was used as cover material in the Group 2
disposal area. All three liners were then placed to a thickness of 3' and
compacted to specification. During drilling and sampling of the pond area,
'-Betav4ssociates - 3
