July 20, 1983
Project 116-1.3
- 2 -
anticipate completing work on Group 1 Trench #4 during the third calendar
quarter. We have submitted some design revisions to your staff, and are
currently awaiting comments.
At present, all evaporation ponds have more than 3.0 feet of freeboard and
we do not anticipate accepting additional drilling mud'or brine waste. In
accordance with the Revised Monitoring and Reporting Program dated 22,
December, 1982, we have attached the analyses of wastewater from Ponds #1
through #5 in Appendix A. As of June 1, 1983, the Barium Pond over trench
,#3, the slit trench adjacent to Trench #3 and evaporation Pond #4 were all
dry. Analyses were performed by California Water Labs, Modesto, California.
Monitoring wells #10 through #16 were installed during the second calendar
quarter. A report of completion and base-line chemical analyses were
submitted along with copies oft`the Logs of Exploratory Borings.
Groundwater samples were collected from Monitoring Wells #7 through #16 on
July 7, 1983. Prior to sampling, each well was bailed to remove a volume
of water equal to five well volumes. The sample was then collected and
filtered through a #42 Whatman Filter Paper to remove suspended solids.
The sample was split .and half of each sample was fixed with nitrid cid to
preserve for metal ions. Analyses of groundwater samples are attached in
r
Appendix B.
These sampling methods and subsequent analyses are in conformance with
"Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater". Analyses
were performed by California Water Labs of Modesto, California, a ,water
laboratory certified by the California Department of Health Services.'
The well numbering system was clarified with staff of the chemical lab and
it was determined that a well identification error was made on the base
line analyses. (The attached map shows the correct well identification).
An examination of the current analyses clearly demonstrates the chloride
ion contamination has not occurred beneath the site.
If you have any questions regarding the contents of this report, please
call.
BETA ASSOCIATES
Jack E.
