Use of gloves and disposable clothing (if <br />necessary) will reduce skin contact with soil. <br /> <br />INGESTION <br />Eating and smoking will not be allowed near known contaminants. <br /> <br />TRAFFIC HAZARDS <br />Field activities taking place in public streets or on road shoulders shall use Caltrans approved flagging and <br />traffic control during the duration of activities. While working in public streets with heavy traffic assume <br />that the operator of a motor vehicle is unable to see you and keep a safe distance from moving traffic. Keep <br />off roadways, when practical, and away from moving traffic. Approved safety vests will be worn by all <br />personnel when working in areas of traffic hazard. <br /> <br />COMMUNICATION PROCEDURES <br />The following standard hand signals will be used if and when required. <br /> Hand gripping throat ................ Out of air, can't breathe <br /> Grip partner's wrist or <br /> both hands around waist. .......... Leave area immediately <br /> Hands on top of head. ............... Need assistance <br /> Thumbs up ................................ OK, I'm all right, I understand <br /> Thumbs down ........................... No, negative <br /> <br />EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN <br />On-site personnel will use the following standard emergency procedures. The Site Safety Officer shall be <br />notified of any on-site emergencies and be responsible for ensuring that the appropriate procedures are <br />followed. Emergency Procedures should be modified as required for the incident. <br /> <br /> Personal injury: Upon notification of an injury, the Site Safety Officer will assess the nature of <br />the injury. If the injury is in the area of the drilling or excavating equipment, the equipment shall <br />be shut down to eliminate running equipment hazards. Equipment will remain shut down until the <br />Site Safety Officer authorizes work to proceed. If the cause of the injury or loss of the injured <br />person does not affect the performance of site personnel, operations may continue. <br /> Fire/Explosion: In the event of a fire or explosion on site, the Site Safety Officer or alternate shall <br />call 911 (the fire department) and all personnel shall be moved to a safe distance from the involved <br />area. <br /> Personal Protective Equipment Failure: If any site worker experiences a failure or alteration of <br />protective equipment that affects worker's protection, that person shall immediately proceed to the <br />nearest staging area to repair or replace the damaged equipment. The person shall not return to the <br />work area until the protective equipment is repaired or replaced. If the equipment cannot be repaired <br />or replaced, the worker will proceed to the primary staging area specified by the Site Safety Officer <br />or leave the site. <br /> Other Equipment Failure: If any other equipment on site fails to operate properly, the Site Safety <br />Officer shall be notified and then determine the effect of this failure on continuing operations on <br />site. If the failure affects the safety of personnel or prevents completion of the work plan tasks, all <br />personnel shall leave the work area until the situation is evaluated and appropriate actions taken. <br />
