This meeting
was attended by representatives of the Department of Health
Services ("DHS"), Klei.nfelder, and Forward, Inc. (Forward). You
requested that I write a summary of the conclusions that were
reached at meeting.
The proposed well design was described in two letters from
Kleinfelder -to the DHS, dated September 26 and October 2, 1990.
Two of the six proposed wells, MW -1B and MW -3B, were designed
with 30 -foot screened casing lengths, and the remaining wells
were designed with 20 -foot screen lengths. The DIIS stated that
the screen lengths may not be longer than 20 feet. Accordingly,
MW -1B and MW -3B will be redesigned and constructed with 20 -foot
screens.
The DHS -is concerned about the use of louvered screens. It
has riot been shown to the satisfaction of the DHS that louvered
screens are as sturdy as wire wrap screens. Additionally, the
DHS has not seen sufficient data -to show that wells constructed
with louvered screens can be developed as well as those
constructed with wire wrap screens. It was also noted that wire
wrap screens would provide consistency between the new wells and
the existing wells at the Forward Landfill, which were
constructed using wire wrap screens. For these reasons, it was
agreed that wire wrap screens would be used instead of louvered
screens.
The DHS recommended that 7.5 gallons water, and 3 lbs.
bentonite be maxed with each sack of cement for the
cement/bentonite grout. The bentonite is to be non -beneficiated
and should be prehydrated. Kleinfelder confirmed that the grout
would be mixed as closely as possible to these specifications,
and that the bentonite will. contain no extenders.
