UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS
On September 23, 1988, the Environmental Protection Agency
published the final federal rules governing the installation and
operation of some 1 . 4 million tank systems nationwide. Many have
already begun spending an estimated ;l billion to test their
systema for leaks, or remove and replace them altogether.
Soil gas analysis is a highly effective, non-disruptive method for
detecting and delineating subsurface contamination from leaking
underground storage tanks (LUSTS) . By measuring the volatile
organic - compounds migrating to the surface in the vicinity of
LUSTS, contaminant plumes can be quickly identified and more cost-
effective remediation gens developed.
Typical Soil Gas Survey Results * ,
* reoacT vraa
SCALE TYPICAL SOIL GAS SURVEY RESULTTr
°" "'
0 50 100 FEET MAP SHOWING BENZENE CONCENTRATIONS
( PARTS PER BILLION )
• SOIL GAS SAMPLE
LOCATION •
%O
r X'0; • 0%00 • •
app
BURIED TANK
PUMPS
aSERVICE
• • • •,00 • p •
STATION
00 '
• ,0
