4/5
calculated amount shown for each well in Table 1. The top five feet of well casing will be removed from
each well and the cavity will be backfilled with Type I/II cement grout with up to 5 percent bentonite.
Grout will be allowed to spill over the well casing into the hole creating a minimum 1-foot grout cap.
Each well box will be removed, and the former well vault cavity will be filled with soil or concrete to
match existing surface conditions.
Investigation Derived Waste (IDW)
IDW is anticipated to be generated during well abandonment activities from the well materials removed at
each well. IDW will be temporarily stored in Department of Transportation (DOT) approved 55-gallon
drums on the Site. Four IDW profile samples will be collected and sent to Belshire Environmental Services,
Inc., an analytical laboratory in Novato, California, for analysis. The samples will be analyzed on a standard
10-day-turnaround for VOCs, TPH diesel and motor oil, Title 22 metals including mercury, and PCBs. It is
assumed the IDW will not be hazardous waste for disposal purposes.
Soil IDW samples will be labeled with site-specific labels and will be placed under chain of custody in a
cooler chilled with ice and shipped to the laboratory for analysis.
After receipt of the laboratory analytical results, the IDW will be transported for offsite disposal by Belshire
Environmental Services, Inc. of Novato, California. The generator listed on the disposal manifests and bill
of lading will be the CDCR. A CDCR representative will sign the disposal manifest.
Any removed well vaults and concrete pads will be disposed of as construction waste.
Schedule and Reporting
URS will conduct field work within 60 days after approval of the final work plan. Well locating and utility
locating field activities are expected to take two (2) full days. Well abandonment activities are expected to
occur a minimum of four (4) days after utility locating field activities and are expected to take four (4) full
days. IDW removal is expected to occur a minimum of two (2) weeks after completion of well abandonment
activities and is expected to take one (1) day.
URS will prepare a draft Well Abandonment Report (Report) for CVWB within 45 days of completing field
activities. The report will document well abandonment activities and at minimum will include the following:
A summary of field activities;
Field notes, including a table to compare the estimated volume versus actual volume of grout used;
Relevant documentation including San Joaquin County well destruction permits, completed well
destruction forms, and disposal manifests or bills of lading for disposal of IDW;
Conclusions and recommendations.
Should you have any questions, please contact Ed Tarter at (916) 361-6429.
Yours sincerely,
Ed Tarter, PE
Project Manager 2/18/2o22
