Geocon Project No. S2170-07-12 - 13 - June 6, 2022
• Follow safe work practices and sampling procedures;
• PPE – eye (safety glasses or goggles) and,
hand protection (leather and/or impermeable gloves)
• Sanitation – good personal hygiene; see Section 4.2

CHEMICAL NAME & CAS# ROUTES OF ENTRY PUBLISHED EXPOSURE LIMITS
CATEGORY CONCENTRATION SOURCE
Tetrachloroethylene, Inhalation
Perchlorethylene (PCE)
127-18-4
PEL-TWA‡ 25 ppm Cal/OSHA
PEL-STEL 100 ppm
PEL-Ceiling 300 ppm
TLV-TWA† 25 ppm ACGIH
TLV-STEL (15 min.) 100 ppm
‡PEL-TWA – Permissible Exposure Limit; TWA - 8-hour time-weighted average concentration adopted by
Cal/OSHA.
†TLV-TWA - Threshold Limit Values for Chemical Substances 2015 published by the ACGIH – American
Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist.
3.7.3 Lead
The risk of significant exposure to inorganic lead is considered low while performing direct-push soil
and groundwater sampling. Sampling methods and work practices to be employed will reduce the
potential for airborne exposures above the 30 μg/m3 Action Level (AL) for inorganic lead.
Detailed information regarding the physical description of lead, including health hazards, routes of
entry into the body, signs and symptoms of exposure, and target organs are published in Attachment D
– T8 CCR §1532.1 Lead Appendix A.

Types/Source: Historic automotive fuel additive.
Exposure Routes: Inhalation & ingestion; ref. Attachment D - T8 CCR §1532.1 Lead –
Appendix A
Qualified Exposure Risk: Low, due to wet sampling methods and/or moist soil conditions
Exposure Controls: Wet methods and adherence to specific sampling methods and procedures.

Based on Negative Exposure Assessments from industrial hygiene monitoring for inorganic lead
performed for representative direct-push soil sampling tasks using similar controls, airborne
concentrations are expected to be well below the 30 microgram per cubic meter (µg/m3) Action Level
[ref. T8 CCR §1532.1(d)].

• Avoid contact with, and inhalation of, airborne contaminated soil/dust.
• PPE (Gloves)
• Follow good personal hygiene practices (see Section 4.2).
