APTIM Work Instruction Number: AMS-830-19-WI-03103
Revision: 0 Approval Date: 8/13/2021
DIRECT PUSH GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
depth to water, total depth, and inside diameter of the temporary screen system. For
example, specified pumps should have sufficient power to lift water, and any downhole
equipment should be narrow enough to operate without fouling or sticking in the direct
push sample tubes.
6.2 Basic Work Instruction
6.2.1 Most direct push groundwater sampling is performed in conjunction with the general
boring installation and after the desired sampling depth has been achieved. In the
process of boring installation, the subcontractor should have observed all requirements
in the scope of work and by extension project plans regarding rig preparation and
decontamination, documentation of bore-hole installation, and any required field
screening with appropriately calibrated equipment. and the Push or advance the
sampling device and protected well screen until it is at the target depth or horizon
where the sample is to be collected.
6.2.2 Retract the protective sleeve upward until the length of well screen is exposed,
allowing water to flow into the temporary well for sampling.
6.2.3 Use a small-diameter electric water-level indicator to determine when enough water is
in the screen for sample collection.
6.2.4 Once enough water is present, unless it is already attached to the probe place any
pump and purge the temporary water column per the project plan.
6.2.5 Collect the water sample from inside the well screen, perform any required field
screening, and transfer into appropriate containers and preservative in accordance
with the project plan. Label and number each sample container as required.
6.2.6 Place the filled container(s) into a cooler with ice for safe and proper preservation
keeping between locations/samples.
6.2.7 Perform any other downhole operations that are required prior to abandoning the hole,
including removing the direct push sampling equipment from the boring and properly
abandon the hole in accordance with the project plans.
6.2.8 Document the sampling event on the appropriate form(s), as specified in the project
work plans. The information listed on the form(s) should, at a minimum, include the
following:
• Project name and number
• Date and time of the sampling event
• Sampling methods used —specify sample type
• Sample number
• Sample location
• Sample depth interval
UNCONTROLLED COPY IF PRINTED Page 5 of 6
