Soil Sampling using a Soil Probe or Core-Type
Sampler in Support of Environmental Investigation
APTIM and Remediation
AMS Number: Revision: Approval Date:
CFS-830-19-WI-32104 INT 7/30/2017
1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to provide the soil-probe and core-type sampling methods for soils and
other solids. These samplers can be used when matrices are composed of relatively soft and non-
cemented formations. They are utilized to collect near-surface core samples and can also be placed
into boreholes at specified depths. Soil probe/corer samplers provide an intact depth-specific sample
for geotechnical, chemical, radiological, or biological analysis.
2.0 APPLICATION
This work instruction applies to all APTIM efforts where environmental samples are being collected in
the field in support of environmental investigation or remediation projects primarily for third parties. It is
not applicable to general APTIM construction projects or facilities unless specifically referenced.
It is applicable to samples collected for chemical, physical, biological, and non-survey radiological
testing as well as for field screening analysis. It does not apply to unexploded ordnance and
radiological survey operations which have separate governing documents.
This work instruction was written using information in ASTM D1452-09 and EM-200-1-3.
3.0 REQUIREMENTS
Project Managers and Project Technical Leads are responsible for making sure that sampling
personnel have been provided the appropriate plans (e.g. Sampling and Analysis Plan, Health and
Safety plan, Field Sampling Plan, Quality Assurance Project Plan) detailing the location, depth ranges,
analyses, and various other pertinent information required for successful sampling operations.
4.0 REFERENCES
AMS-710-04-PR-1106 Chain of Custody
AMS-830-19-WI-30001 Shipping and Packaging of Non Hazardous Samples
AMS-830-19-GL-30001 Guidelines for Packaging and Shipment of DOT/IATA-Hazardous
Samples
AMS-830-19-FM-30001 Form—Cooler Shipment Checklist
AMS-830-19-PR-32101 Collection of Soil Samples via Hand Methods in Support of
Environmental Investigation and Remediation
AMS-830-19-WI-32101 Hand Auger Sampling in Support of Environmental Investigation and
Remediation
AMS-830-19-PR-30003 Decontamination of Contact Sampling Equipment in Support of
Environmental Investigation and Remediation
AMS-830-19-WI-32401 Sampling for VOCs in Soils-Syringe-type Sampler and Pre-weighed
Vial
American Society of Testing and Materials, D1452-09, Standard Practice for Soil Exploration and
Sampling by Auger Borings, West Conshohocken, PA.
US Army Corps of Engineers, EM-200-1-3, Requirements for the Preparation of Sampling and
Analysis Plans, 1994
5.0 WORK INSTRUCTION
5.1 Equipment
The following equipment should be used when conducting soil probe sampling:
• Decontaminated soil core sampler and extensions, stainless steel construction for
trace environmental sampling.
UNCONTROLLED COPY IF PRINTED Page 2 of 4
