COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDER HANDLING
Although unprocessed compressed gas cylinders are not accepted at Alco, we do have a policy on rim",
to handle certified and non-certified cylinders, should we find them in and around our yard.
PRE-PROCESSED COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS
Cylinders that arrive in our facility are considered Pre-Processed if their valves are
removed, and the cylinders have been cut and/or punctured to ensure there is no
remaining gas left in the cylinder. Once the Pre-Processed Cylinders have been
presented to our purchasing agents, yard supervisors, foreman, and general labors
mush ensure the following procedures that are met to process the material.
9. Inspection of tanks to ensure no remaining gas exists.
2. Inspection to ensure that valves have been removed and large opening has been
cut into tank.
3. If both I and 2 are met then these Cylinders will be visibly marked with a large
green paint stripe indicating they are safe for processing, All shear operators
must ensure that the green line is on any cylinder prior to processing.
NON CERTIFIED or NON PROCESSED_COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS
Non-certified compressed gas cylinders can be described as cylinders that do not came
with any documentation certifying them as acceptable for scrap processing or if there is
any chance that gas remains in them. If an inspector cannot tell if these cylinders are
not Pre-Processed they must assume that are still intact and must not enter our
processing stream. These are generally brought in by the general public and should
never be accepted. If found, the following procedures MUST be followed.
I, Purchasers must notify customers that material is not accepted and alert yard
supervisors/inspectors to make sure the material is not off loaded.
2. Yard supervisorshnspectors must confirm that customers have left the property
without off-loading material at our yard. Communication will be by radio and/or
verbally to purchasers.
3. In the event that the material is found after a customer has left our facility, Alco
employees MUST notify their supervisors immediately.
4. Should the material be deemed unsafe (valves remaining, no cuts or punctures),
the cylinder will be visibly marked with another color (pink) which will signify that
the cylinder is unsafe and MUST be placed in a safe holding container, in a
segregated area. These boxes will be labeled.
5, Alco will then arrange for a company specializing in handling compressed
cylinders to pick up the cylinders on a weekly basis for proper disposal.
