8LFR
LEVINE•FRICKE
August 27, 2002 001-07979-00-001
SRDC i]V)EDD
Mr. Robert McClellon
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division AUG 2 8 2002
304 East Webber Avenue, 3rd Floor ENVIRONMENT HEALTH
Stockton, California 95202 PERMIT/SERVICES
Subject: Third Quarter 2002 Soil Gas Monitoring Report, Forward Landfill, San Joaquin
County, California
Dear Mr. McClellon:
This letter report presents results of soil gas monitoring conducted by LFR Levine-Fricke (LFR)
on behalf of Forward Incorporated (Forward) at the Forward Landfill in San Joaquin County
during the third quarter of 2002. Forward has retained LFR to conduct quarterly soil gas and
water quality monitoring at the Forward Landfill. Soil gas monitoring was conducted on August
12, 2002 at the on-site structures and soil gas probe locations presented on Figure 1.
LFR personnel were unable to locate landfill gas probes GP-1, GP-2, or GP-3. These three probes
have apparently been buried with soil by earth moving equipment. As a result, no monitoring was
conducted at these locations. According to Forward personnel, these three probes are scheduled
to be replaced.
Procedures
Perimeter landfill gas monitoring was conducted at seven landfill gas probes during August 12,
2002 by LFR personnel. Concentrations of methane, oxygen, and carbon dioxide within the seven
soil gas probes and buildings onsite were monitored using a calibrated Land tec GEM 2000 gas
analyzer and extraction monitor (GEM). The GEM was certified as calibrated to factory
specifications by the rental supplier, EquipCo, prior to each sampling event.
At each pfobe, a reading of ambient air in the vicinity of the probe being tested was recorded
before soil gas was monitored within the probe. Initially, the GEM was attached to the soil gas
probe, the valve was opened, and the initial soil gas probe pressure was monitored and recorded.
Then the GEM's internal pump was activated to extract soil gas from the probe. Readings for
methane, oxygen, and carbon dioxide were monitored until the readings stabilized. After the
readings were recorded, the internal pump was deactivated and the post-reading soil gas probe
pressure was monitored and recorded. The soil gas probe valve was then closed, and the GEM
was disconnected. The main office, maintenance yard buildings, and the weigh station were also
monitored to assess potential gas accumulations at the foundations. The landfill gas probe and
building locations are shown on Figure 1.
4080CavittStallmanRoad,Suite 100,Granite Bay,California 95746.9460 • (916)786-0320 • fax(916)786-0366 • www.ifr.com
Offices Worldwide
