kn KLEINFELDER
2 SCOPE OF WORK
2.1. INITIAL EXCAVATION DEPTH ASSESSMENT
Initial sampling took place on October 22, 1999 from Interim WMU F before excavation
commenced. Samples were taken from the impoundment base and surrounding levees. A hand
auger was used to remove the soil to a depth of 2' and 3' so that a sample could be obtained with
a drive sampler. The drive sampler collects a 6" soil core in a brass tube. After obtaining a soil
sample, the ends of the brass tube are covered with Teflon sheets. Plastic end caps were then
placed over top of 'the Teflon sheets to prevent contamination or loss of the sample.
Decontamination procedures were performed on all of the sampling equipment and brass
collection tubes between samples. The sample tubes were kept iced in coolers and then
relinquished with a chain-of-custody to Sequoia Analytical. The chain-of-custody requested
Sequoia to perform the following analyses on the samples:
• EPA Method 8260 (Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs))
• EPA Method 8270 (Semivolatile Organics)
• EPA Method 8141 (Organophosphorous Compounds)
• EPA Method 8150 (Chlorinated Herbicides)
Laboratory analysis of samples collected at depths of 2' on October 22, 1999 revealed no
contamination in the samples; therefore the samples taken at 3' were not analyzed. Forward
Landfill staff were told they could start excavation of the surface impoundment.
2.2. EXCAVATION OBSERVATION
During a visit to the site on November 29, 1999, Kleinfelder observed initial demolition of
Interim WMU F. Forward had begun to remove about a third of the surrounding berms and soil
in the impoundment to a depth of 3' below the surface. Once excavation was complete, the soil
IN and liner materials were disposed of in WMU D-99 (not observed by Kleinfelder).
23-483849-1303/23108071 Page 3 of 7 April 11,2000
Copyright 2000 Kleinfelder,Inc.
