PES Environmental, Inc.
Heart rate will be measured by the redial pulse of the wrist for thirty seconds as early as
possible in the resting period. Body core temperature can be measured by means of an "ear"
thermometer. The heart rate at the beginning of the rest period should not exceed 100 beats
per minute. If the heart rate is in excess of the above guideline, the next work period will be
shortened by one-third, while the length of the rest period stays the same. If the heart rate is
in excess of 110 beats per minute at the beginning of the next rest period, the following work
cycle will be further shortened by one-third. An employee with a body core temperature in
excess of 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit will not be allowed to return to work after the rest period
until the core temperature returns to 99 degrees Fahrenheit or below.
Workers experiencing heat stress that is not relieved by rest period/work period modifications
will be removed immediately from field work and be required, if conscious, to consume
two to four pints of electrolyte fluid or cool water every hour while resting in a shaded area.
The individual should not return to work until symptoms are no longer recognizable. If the
symptoms appear critical, persist, or get worse, immediate medical attention will be sought.
6.2 Cold Stress
Cold Stress is the adverse stress to the body due to exposure to excess cold. Cold stress
symptoms and monitoring tips are presented in above section.
7.0 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
In general, the following level of protection will be adhered to:
Level D
Dermal Protection - Steel-toed boots, disposable gloves.
Other Equipment - hard hat, eye, and ear protection.
7.1 Inspection of PPE
Specific procedures recommended by equipment manufacturers should be followed for
inspection of PPE. A general inspection checklist for PPE before use includes:
• Determining that the clothing material is correct for the specified task at hand;
• Visually inspect for imperfect seams, non-uniform coatings, tears, closure
malfunctions, hold up to light and check for pinholes;
• Hard Hats - Head harness is intact and installed properly. Check for cracks;
• Safety Glasses/Goggles - Lenses are clear and free of scratches. Side shields are
present;
148400101H002.doc 12
