SOP-006 Standard Operating Procedure
Mud Rotary Drilling Page 4 of 5 REVISION NO. 0 March 2020
Sharpe Army Depot
• Premature total depth due to refusal and the cause of refusal
2.3.3 Sampling and Geophysical Testing
Sampling or geophysical testing may be conducted at any depth by interrupting the advancement of the drill bit, cleaning the borehole of cuttings, stopping mud circulation, and removing the drill-rod column from the borehole. Drill-rod removal is not necessary when sampling or testing can be performed through the hollow axis of the drill rods and bit.
Borehole geophysical tests may be run at various depths or prior to completing the well. The site geologist/engineer should note the type(s) of tests run, logging conditions, distribution of log copies and originals, and any observed problems on the field daily log (SOP-002).
Samples can be taken from drill cuttings or by traditional sampling methods (e.g., split spoon sampler). Samples will be handled according to SOPs outlined in SOP-001 (Field Sample Management), SOP-004 (Chain-of-Custody), and SOP-005 (Packing and Shipping).
2.3.4 Borehole Abandonment
Abandon the hole following the procedure outlined in the project work plans. The abandonment will be supervised by the site geologist/engineer.
2.4 Demobilization/Site Restoration
After drilling, sampling, and well installation or borehole abandonment is completed, the drill pipe and tools are laid down, the mast is lowered, and the rig is moved off of the location. Demobilization/site restoration will be supervised by the site geologist/engineer or appropriate designee.
All debris generated by the drilling operation should be disposed of appropriately. The site should be cleaned, the ground washed as necessary, and the site conditions restored as per the project work plans. All abandoned borings should be topped off and completed as per the project work plans. All monitoring wells should also have their surface completions finished as per the project work plans. Any hazards remaining as a result of drilling activities should be identified, and appropriate barriers and markers are put in place, as per the Accident Prevention Plan. All soil cuttings and fluids should be properly contained, clearly labeled and maintained in compliance with the project work plans
