SOP-009 Standard Operating Procedure Low-Flow Groundwater Quality and Sample Collection
Page 8 of 9 Revision No. 1 April 2019

Sharpe Army Depot
the flow cell meter onto the well sampling data sheet. If readings did not stabilize after 6 readings, note this on the well sampling data sheet and enter a note into the sampling database. If this occurs in two consecutive sampling events for a specific well, the well should be considered for redevelopment.
• Record the final flow cell meter readings for all of the chosen parameters on the well sampling data sheet (hard copy) to ensure field parameters are available for entry into the Sharpe Site sampling database, should something happen to the flow cell meter prior to uploading the data to the database.
• Measure and record on the well sampling data sheet the post-purge water level to the nearest 0.01 foot and enter into the sampling database.

4.8 Groundwater Sample Collection
Following the collection of groundwater parameters, groundwater samples should be collected. To collect groundwater samples, disconnect the in-line flow cell/analyzer Tygon tubing from the sampling spigot. Place a bucket under the spigot to contain the outflow during sampling. The sampling flow rate should remain the same as the purge rate (400 mL or less). If the flow rate needs to be minimized to reduce disturbance in the water column and to provide a slower, steadier stream, the water quality parameters should again be stabilized before sampling. Put on clean gloves prior to sampling. Collect requested samples by filling associated sampling bottles such that there is a meniscus protruding from the top of the sample bottles and then replace the cap on the sample bottles, ensuring that there are no air bubbles in the sample bottle. Turn off the digital controller to stop flow after sampling. Disconnect the hoses from the well cap. Return the well sample spigot to its hole in the well head. Close and lock the well.
Well purging will continue until the requested groundwater samples have been collected, or until a maximum of three well volumes have been purged. An additional water level measurement should also be taken after monitoring is completed to assure the drop in water level is not excessive. Complete paperwork as needed.
4.9 Demobilization and Equipment Decontamination
• Stop purging the well, remove pump if non-dedicated and tubing and electrical line from the well.
• Install the well cap or J-plug. Store dedicated discharge tubing in well or contain on vehicle as applicable. Decontaminate non-dedicated pump and tubing with water and soap, purging tubing by operating the pump (SOP-003).
• For wells located in a busy street, once all sampling equipment is packed, travel to the next scheduled location before decontaminating field equipment.
• Pumps should not be stored in an area where volatile sources (e.g., household cleaning chemicals, fuels, oils) are present; pumps shall not be stored without appropriate decontamination. Prior to use, the outside of the pump and tubing should be thoroughly rinsed with reagent grade water.
