Equipment will be inspected daily; tests will be made at the start of each shift to <br /> ensure that the braking and operating systems are in proper working condition . <br /> Seats and seatbelts must be available to and in use by all operators and passengers . <br /> Stationary machinery and equipment will be placed on a firm foundation and secured <br /> ( outriggers ) prior to operation . <br /> Mechanized equipment will be shut down prior to and during fueling operations . <br /> Communication will be maintained with operator prior to approaching and while working <br /> adjacent to all heavy equipment . <br /> Communication between operator and ground personnel using either radios or hand signals is <br /> required . Communication methods shall be determined prior to beginning work activities . <br /> Barriers or blockades will be placed around the bodies of articulating equipment . Individuals <br /> will not walk or otherwise travel beneath a load ( bucket, etc . ) <br /> 4 . 2 . 6 MACHINERY <br /> Intentionally Left Blank <br /> 4 . 2 . 7 HEAT EXPOSURE <br /> Workers who are exposed to extreme heat or work in hot environments may be at risk of heat <br /> stress . Exposure to extreme heat can result in occupational illnesses and injuries . Heat stress can <br /> result in heat rashes, heat cramps , heat exhaustion , or heat stroke . Heat can also increase the <br /> risk of injuries in workers as it may result in sweaty palms, fogged - up safety glasses, and dizziness . <br /> Burns may also occur as a result of accidental contact with hot surfaces or steam . Workers at risk <br /> of heat stress include outdoor workers and workers in hot environments such as firefighters , <br /> bakery workers , farmers, construction workers, miners , boiler room workers , factory workers, <br /> and others . Workers at greater risk of heat stress include those who are 65 years of age or older, <br /> are overweight, have heart disease or high blood pressure , or take medications that may be <br /> affected by extreme heat . <br /> Acclimation to Heat <br /> To acclimate, workers should gradually increase their exposure time in hot environmental <br /> conditions over a 7 - 14- day period . New workers will need more time to acclimatize than workers <br /> who have already had some exposure . For new workers, the schedule should be no more than a <br /> 20 <br />
