Urushiol can remain <br /> active on the surface of objects for up to 5 years . <br /> o Wear disposable gloves during this process . <br /> • Do not burn plants or brush piles that may contain poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac . <br /> o Inhaling smoke from burning plants can cause severe allergic respiratory problems . <br /> 4 . 2 . 24 EXCAVATIONS/ HOLES/ DITCHES/TRENCHES <br /> The requirements in this section shall be followed whenever excavation is being performed . <br /> Below are the hazard controls and safe work practices to follow when working around or <br /> performing excavation . <br /> • An ICS Excavation permit shall be completed and issued by an ICS Competent Person prior <br /> to starting any excavation <br /> • A spotter shall be used during excavation to assist the operator when his view is <br /> obstructed <br /> • Do not enter the excavations unless completely necessary, and only after the excavation <br /> competent person has completed their daily inspection and has authorized entry . An <br /> inspection shall be conducted by the competent person prior to the start of work, as <br /> needed throughout the shift, after every rainstorm , and after any hazard increasing <br /> occurrence . Documentation of the inspection must be always maintained onsite . <br /> • Follow all excavation entry requirements established by the excavation competent <br /> person and any excavation permit being used . <br /> • Sloping, benching, shoring, shielding, or other protective systems are required to protect <br /> personnel from cave - ins except when the excavation is made entirely in stable rock or is <br /> less than 5 feet deep and there is no indication of possible cave - in , as determined by the <br /> excavation competent person . Protective systems for excavations deeper than 20 feet <br /> must be designed or approved by a registered professional engineer ( PE ) . <br /> 36 <br />
