B. General Procedure for Handling Regulated Medical Waste and Preparil" <br />it for Shipment <br />The Region will not knowingly transport or receive regulated medical waste <br />unless that waste is in compliance with all applicable laws, including packaging <br />and labeling requirements. <br />1. When packing, sealing, inspecting, or moving regulated medical waste <br />containers, use 6f personal protective equipment as detailed in the <br />Exposure Control Plan is required. <br />2. Prior to using a RMW container that will be the final container transported <br />by the RMW contractor for disposal, staff must: <br />• Examine the container to ensure that the RMW container is <br />properly marked or labeled with the shipping name "Regulated <br />Medical Waste, n.o.s.", UN number "UN 3291", the OSHA <br />Biohazard symbol and the word "BIOHAZARD" ON TWO <br />OPPOSITE SIDES of the container. <br />• Examine for visible external contamination. If external contamination <br />is observed, the exterior of the container must be disinfected. <br />• Examine for structural integrity (i.e. ruptures, breaks or holes). <br />Containers which are not structurally sound must not be used. <br />REGULATED MEDICAL <br />WASTE, n.o.s. <br />3. Before using a RMW container (either a plastic container or cardboard <br />box), staff will place a large plastic biohazard liner inside the container <br />to prepare for the discarding of biohazard waste. Staff will place all bagged <br />biohazard waste and plastic sharps containers inside this plastic liner. <br />4. During use of RMW containers, it is the responsibility of staff to place only <br />RMW in the RMW container. Other hazardous materials (i.e. flammables, <br />aerosol cans) must not be placed in RMW containers. <br />5.
