11 <br />8. Containers that appear to be damaged or leaking must be replaced with a <br />new container. <br />9. Needles or other sharps are not allowed to be disposed of in any container <br />other than those provided for this purpose. <br />10. After containers are 3/4 full or to the fill line, the container must be properly <br />closed before removing it from the work area. <br />11.A recyclable sharps container program (Bio Systems Reusable <br />Containers) is offered by the waste vendor. If the location utilizes this <br />program, more information will be provided below in the state/local <br />sections as appropriate. <br />J 11117 r • F • • <br />EpiPens are typically handled as regulated medical waste however there <br />are certain States that do not recognize EpiPens as regulated medical <br />waste but rather recognize it as hazardous waste. <br />a. See State or Local section for specific guidance regarding proper <br />handling and disposal of EpiPens if there is a variation from what this <br />section details. <br />2. Used EpiPens that have been administered to a person having a severe <br />allergic reaction can be discarded in a sharps container as Regulated <br />Medical Waste. <br />3. EpiPens that have NOT been administered can be discarded as Regulated <br />Medical Waste but must be incinerated. <br />a. Unused but expired EpiPens should not be intentionally discharged <br />prior to disposal. <br />b. To discard unused EpiPens, contact by phone or email the regulated <br />medical water hauler and request an incineration label and box. <br />c. When contact is initiated with the waste hauler, ensure the <br />information is available <br />• Customer number <br />• Address <br />• Contact name <br />• E-mail address <br />• Telephone number <br />1.
