Box 3004
Lodi, CA 95240
RE: INFECTIOUS WASTE DISPOSAL
Dear Mr. Sandford,
RECEIVED
J U L 2 3 1990
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
PERMIT/SERVICES
July 18, 1990
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of concerns I
have regarding the disposal of your refuse compactor which con-
tains your sterilized infectious waste.
Four weeks ago, on Monday, June 25, 1990, an employee of
ours was punctured by a hypodermic needle disposed of in your
refuse compactor.
The puncture wound occurred when he stepped on a "Winfield,
Symbol of Safety" infectious waste hamper. The hamper was bro-
ken, and one of the needles contained in the hamper, punctured
his left foot.
On Friday, June 29, 1990, at 10:00 a.m., our Transfer Sta-
tion Supervisor discovered five infectious waste bags dumped from
your refuse compactor. Three of the infectious waste bags were
red with the Bio Hazard label and had no indication that.it had
been sterilized.
On the same day, we received a call from Harney Lane Land-
fill informing us that there were over fifty bags of infectious
waste at the landfill which came from our truck and we were
instructed to clean them up. We attempted to explain that Lodi
Memorial Hospital sterilizes its waste and we understand that
they have the proper authorization to dispose of the waste at the
Harney Lane Landfill. The Harney Lane Landfill authorities
claimed they had no knowledge of any infectious waste or steri-
lized waste being authorized to be disposed of at their landfill.
-1-
1
1333 E.
