101Reviewed: Oct, 1991 <br />"INFECTIOUS WASTE"" DISPOSAL <br />DEFINITION: <br />1. "Infectious Waste" means <br />A. Laboratory wastes <br />B. Pathologic specimens (contracted by the Lab for disposal) <br />C, Surgical specimens (same contract as above) <br />D, Equipment, instruments, utensils and ocher disposable <br />materials, <br />1. Needles/Syringes and sharps <br />2, Blood stained materials <br />3. Hemovac containers <br />4. Dressings <br />5. Pleurivacs <br />6. Suction bottles and tubing <br />7, Respirator and IPPB tubing <br />8, All IV lines, arterial lines, ie_swans, ganz, <br />temporary pacemaker lines etc....... .... <br />9, All trash from Surgical Suites, G,I.Lab , Labor cx <br />Delivery rooms and ER rooms, <br />E, "Isolation Wastes'' <br />PURPOSE: To separate infectious wasteatthe "poinrof origen" that il: <br />may be properly disposed of in the appropriate manner. <br />PROCEDURE: <br />A. The,Housekeeping staff will pick-up the infectious waste <br />in red bags and double bag in the red bags. <br />B. The bags will be securely tied and shall veet the dart <br />test as required by lam. <br />C,. All infectious waste will be relocated in a specific cart <br />used for that purpose only. <br />D, The double bagged waste will then be placed into an auto <br />clave bag and either placed directly into the auto clave <br />or in an infectious waste cart and locked until it can <br />be auto claved. <br />E. The sharps containers are placed into boxes provided by <br />the haulers and kept in a locked area until their picked -up. <br />F. The chemo containers are placed into Loxes provided by <br />the haulers and kept in a locked area until their picked - <br />111), <br />G. Hazardous Waste is brought to the basement by the Housekeepin <br />staff with an MSDS for the material being relocated. It, - <br />is then placed in the tensed area and kept locked and the <br />MSDS if placed in the Hskp. Office, This will be placed <br />on a manifest and hauling arrangements are made accordingly. <br />H. All of the above items are hauled by contracted licensed <br />haulers only, <br />Any break in the above procedure must be reported immediately <br />to the Housekeeping Supervisor and a notification form must <br />be filed with the Quality Management Dept, <br />All waste having been run through the auto clave are considered <br />non-infectious waste and will be placed into the compactor to <br />be removed as regular trash. <br />
