RCRA (Federal Resources Conservation and Recovery Act) Pharmaceutical <br />Wastes -- waste pharmaceuticals that are listed as federally hazardous, radioactive <br />or classified as municipal solid waste. See Attachment A. <br />F. Non-RCRA Pharmaceutical Wastes - waste pharmaceuticals which are not <br />federally hazardous (non-RCRA), radioactive or classified as municipal solid waste. <br />A list of Pharmaceutical that has passed the fish toxicity test and considered safe to <br />dispose of in the sewage system or solid wastage system in California is attached. <br />(see Attachment B <br />G. California "only" Hazardous Waste — In the State of California, all pharmaceutical <br />wastes are considered hazardous except a specific list of pharmaceuticals that has <br />passed the fish toxicity test and is authorized for disposal into the regular wastage <br />systems. See attachment B. <br />III. UNUSABLE PHARMACEUTICALS <br />A. Identification of outdated or otherwise unusable drugs: <br />1. All drugs shall be checked on a regular basis. <br />2. Designated persons are responsible for checking the expiration date of all <br />medications stocked in the Pharmacy. The pharmacist will check the expiration <br />dates of medications prior to dispensing. <br />3. The medications found in the nursing stations will be routinely inspected during <br />the monthly nursing station inspections. Discontinued and outdated drugs and <br />containers with illegible or missing labels will be returned to the pharmacy for <br />proper disposition. <br />B. Storage area for unusable pharmaceuticals <br />1. The authorized place for storage and handling of outdated or otherwise unusable <br />drugs is the Pharmacy. <br />2. In the event of a large recall of IV solutions or bulk pharmaceutical items, the <br />Inpatient Pharmacy Director or designee will notify the Patient Care Leader of <br />recall notice. Handle recalled pharmaceuticals per Division of Pharmacy Policies <br />and Procedures. <br />3. Only pharmaceutical products for credit/reimbursement are returned. <br />C. Pharmaceutical waste must be placed in Pharmaceutical Waste containers that state <br />"Incineration Only." <br />IV. PHARMACEUTICAL WASTE HANDLING and DISPOSAL <br />A. Pharmaceutical Waste: All vials, syringes, or other dosage forms containing a <br />pourable or measurable amount of medication should be disposed of in a Blue & <br />White Pharmaceutical Waste container that labeled "Incineration Only." <br />
