Nitrogen Mustard will be inactivated with Sodium Thiosulfate prior to disposal.
e. Record amount discarded on Hazardous Waste List. (Hazardous Chemical
Waste must be manifested = the hazardous wastes are recorded on a multi -
copy -shipping document and can be tracked from the point -or -generation to
their final destination.)
f. Retain a copy of the list in the pharmacy for 3 years.
g. Call Materials Management and request special bulk chemotherapy waste
pick- up when container is 75% full. Provide Materials Management
personnel with the list of chemotherapeutic agents in the container. Materials
Management staff will deliver it to the Hazardous Waste Storage area to be
disposed of by a licensed hazardous waste company.
h. See Materials Management policy and procedure for disposal outside of the
facility.
3. RCRA (Federal) hazardous waste pharmaceuticals must be placed in a black
container marked "RCRA Hazardous Waste." A completed yellow hazardous
waste label must be attached. Call EVS and request that the waste be taken to
the Hazardous Waste Storage area. RCRA waste is separated into two
separate bins: aerosol and non -aerosol RCRA waste. Label each bin with the
date started and the date to be removed, 11 months from start date.
(See Attachment A for RCRA Pharmaceutical Waste Alphabetical List)
4. Non-RCRA pharmaceutical waste that cannot be disposed of in the sewage
system or solid wastage system in California (also know as California "only"
hazardous waste) must be placed in a Pharmaceutical Waste container and be
labeled "Incineration Only" on the lid and sides of the container. Request EVS to
take the waste to the Medical Waste Storage area.
V. Education and Training
A. Staff training on appropriate handling of pharmaceutical waste will be done during
orientation of new clinical staff.
B. Compliance with appropriate waste procedures will be audited weekly during
environmental rounds. A schematic diagram of Waste Handling will be available to
staff to assist them in differentiating appropriate waste stream management. (See
Attachment C.)
