u
pil.
SAN
, SERVICESPOST OFFICE BOX 1020
STOCKTON. CALIFORNIA 95201
1 ..
May 4, 1983
Jack J. Williams, M.D.
District Health Officer
San Joaquin Local Health District
1601 E. Hazelton Avenue
Stockton, CA 95201
Dear Doctor Williams:
As provided by Section 314 of Title 17, California Adminis-
trative Code, hospital infectious waste shall be disposed of in an
incinerator providing complete combustion, unless other procedures
have been approved by the Local Health District. As we have dis-
cussed in the past, this procedure is not practical at San Joaquin
General Hospital, and we therefore request your review and approv-
al of the attached procedures for disposal of infectious waste.
As described in the attached procedures, disposal of labora-
tory microbiological waste consists of autoclaving of all contam-
inated materials, followed by disposition of solid waste materials
in a sanitary landfill. In addition, San Joaquin General Hospital
has recently implemented new procedures for the disposal of patient -
related infectious waste in conformance with the anticipated changes
in state regulations. Patient -related infectious waste, as de-
scribed in the attached procedures, is collected and double bagged
in red plastic bags labelled "Infectious Waste." All infectious
bags collected from the inpatient areas are then deposited in a
separate, covered and locked "infectious waste" bin provided by
the local Scavenger service. On a regular basis, the contents of
the "infectious waste" bin are removed to a licensed, Class II
sanitary landfill. As required, "infectious waste" bins -are appro-
priately cleaned before being returned to the hospital site.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance in
this matter. If you have need of additional information, please
feel free to contact me at your convenience.
Sincerely,
L
Steve Ebert, Deputy Director
Support Services
SPE: cm
Attachments
