Box L020 <br />Stockton, California 95201 <br />Dear Dr. 73arber: <br />ret Disposal of Infected ?caste, <br />San Joaquin General Hospital <br />Section 314 of Title 17, California Administrative Code, specifies the <br />manner in which disposition may be made of infected hospital waste. <br />Ideally, contaminated materials should be disposf-1A of by immediate burn- <br />ing. However, an incinerator used for such purpose must meet emission <br />requirements established by the Air Pollution Control District. <br />You have indicated that burning of all infected of contaminated materials <br />is not practicable at San Joaquin General Hospital, and have described <br />the following alternative methods of. disposal: <br />Infecl.ed or contaminated materials are packaged, at L-hc <br />source, in sealed, impervious bags. The packaged haste <br />is stored in beak -proof, cleanable, covered containers, <br />pending removal. <br />Disposable syrinF;es and needles are made unusable before <br />packaging in impervious containers. <br />Packaged <br />wastes are transported by packer to the Lovelace <br />I'ranafer Station, for subsequent disposal in an approved <br />sanitary landfill. <br />Surgical specimens and other tissues Are incinerated <br />at <br />the (iospital. <br />'Lhe alternative procedure you have described for disposal of contaminated <br />material is hereby approved. Such approval may be renewed annually, as <br />provided in Section 314, Title 17, California Administrative Code, as long <br />as available information indicates that the procedure does not constitute <br />a hazard to the public health. <br />Very ,rely yours, <br />JAJ.
