Complaint Investigation Summary Report #. 5105
COMPLAINT ID: C00055108 Site Location: 12617 N MUNDY LN
Activity Summary
Activity Date Recorded by
10/12/2022 RECEIVED AND REVIEWED EMAILS FROM JEFF FOWLES (CDPH) SOOD
REGARDING THALLIUM LEVELS IN KALE CHIPS EXPLAINING THE FAMILY'S
URINARY THALLIUM PATTERN. BELOW IS A COPY OF THE EMAILS
RECEIVED.
The slight elevation in urine thallium in the family's dog, Barley, coincided with
elevations in barium and uranium. These elevations remained consistent across
two sampling timepoints even though Barley was barred from the backyard for the
second sampling. Our review of online data on dog food metal contaminants
found that metals can be generally higher than would be expected or even allowed
in human foodstuffs.. So the higher thallium in Barley the dog is unrelated to the
kale chips.
Get Outlook for iOS
From: Mark Miller <ucsfpehsumiller@gmail.com>
Sent: Wednesday, October 12, 2022 7:58:04 AM
To: Harrison, Robert <Robert.Harrison@ucsf.edu>
Cc: Fowles, Jeff@CDPH <Jeff.Fowles@cdph.ca.gov>; Barreau, Tracy@CDPH
<Tracy.Barreau@cdph.ca.gov >; Bartlett, Russell@CDPH
<Russell.Bartlett@cdph.ca.gov>: Choudhury, Asha@CDPH
<Asha.Choudhury@cdph.ca.gov >; Johnstone, Jeremy
<Johnstone.Jeremy@epa.gov>: Nicholas Callahan <nlcallahan@fbi.gov>; Sutter,
Mark <mark.sutter@hq.dhs.gov >; Erica <erica.waters@comcast.net>: Sood,
Omran [EHD] <osood@sjgov.org>; Muni Naidu <mnaidu@sjgov.org>; Angela
Manassero <manaan2@hotmail.com>; Vidrio, Edgar@CDPH
<Edgar.Vidrio@cdph.ca.gov >; Javed, Amir@CDPH <Amir.Javed@cdph.ca.gov >
Subject: Re: Thallium investigation - kale chips results
This Message Is From an External Sender
This message came from outside your organization.
Report Suspicious
The kids had kale chips as their regular snack, so very frequently. Also broccoli, a
brassica as well. The father was the only one in the family that didn't eat them, he
liked junk food so he has his snacks separately. He was also the one that never
tested positive.
On Wed, Oct 12, 2022 at 10:36 AM Harrison, Robert
<Robert.Harrison@ucsf.edu> wrote:
Thanks Jeff, super interesting - did the kids also eat the kale chips?
Have you given this info to the family?
Sent from my iPhone
On Oct 11, 2022, at 5:32 PM, Fowles, Jeff@CDPH <Jeff.Fowles@cdph.ca.gov>
wrote:
This Message Is From an External Sender
This message came from outside your organization.
Dear all,
Our Food and Drug Laboratory Branch colleagues have come back with results
from the kale chip analysis for the thallium exposure investigation.
