Policy <br />It is the policy of this facility to appropriately handle patient/resident care use items and <br />body/blood fluids as potentially hazardous per the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard <br />definitions. <br />Urine and feces <br />Urine and feces should be flushed directly down the toilet. Use PPE if splashing is <br />probable. Utensils (bedpans, urinals, emesis basins) are to be washed with <br />antimicrobial soap and water and returned to the same patient/resident. <br />Thermometers <br />Digital thermometers are used with single use disposable probe covers. Probes will be <br />wiped off with alcohol swab after each use. Glass thermometers, if used, will be <br />disinfected according to policy and procedure. <br />Bagging of <br />Objects that are contaminated with potentially infectious materials shall be placed in an <br />articles <br />impervious bag. If outside contamination of the bag is likely, a second bag shall be <br />added. <br />Invasive <br />Personal protective equipment as described above shall be used when performing <br />procedures <br />invasive procedures to avoid exposure. If an associate's skin or mucous membranes <br />may come in contact with body fluids, then gowns, masks, and eye protection shall be <br />worn. <br />Resuscitation <br />Pocket masks, resuscitation bags and other ventilation devices shall be provided in <br />equipment <br />strategic locations as well as to key personnel in areas where the need for <br />resuscitation is likely. <br />Performance of <br />All procedures involving blood or other potentially infectious materials shall be <br />procedures <br />performed in a manner as to minimize splashing, spattering, spraying, and/or <br />generation of droplets of these materials. <br />Mouth pipetting/suctioning of blood or other potentially infectious materials is <br />prohibited. <br />Specimens <br />All specimens of blood or other potentially infectious materials shall be placed in a <br />container that prevents leakage during collection, handling, processing, storage, <br />transport, or shipping. <br />Continued on next page <br />Beverly Healthcare Infection Control Program Guidelines Page 3.13 <br />
