Arcadis Heat Illness Prevention Plan (HIPP) <br />HASP Supplement <br />When the SSO is not available, an alternate responsible person must be assigned <br />to look for signs and symptoms of heat illness. Such a designated observer will be <br />trained and know what steps to take if heat illness occurs. <br />3. Maintain regular communication between Project Manager or SSO / designee <br />and field staff (e.g. via mobile phone, radio or another effective means) for <br />observation of early signs of heat illness. <br />4. Designate one or more employees as authorized to contact emergency medical <br />services and communicating that if no designate is identified and the SSO is <br />unavailable that any employee can call for emergency medical assistance. <br />5. Modify work schedule to avoid hottest parts of the day (e.g. start work earlier in <br />the AM, stop work for the hottest hours of the day, conduct work during the <br />evening).Additionally, tailgate Safety Meetings will include a review the high heat <br />procedures, encourage employees to drink plenty of water, and remind employees <br />of the importance to take a preventative or recovery cool-down rest when <br />necessary. <br />Employees will be observed for alertness and signs and symptoms of heat illness <br />at regular intervals to be documented in the field book or field log. <br />The “Buddy System” must be implemented. Particular attention needs to be paid to <br />new employees or employees who have yet to acclimate to high heat conditions. <br />Additionally, frequent communication will be maintained with employees working by <br />themselves (via cell phone or two-way radio), to evaluate early warning signs and <br />symptoms of heat illness. <br />third <br />without changing the rest period. <br />- If oral temperature still exceeds 99.6°F (37.6°C) at the beginning of the next rest <br />period, shorten the following work cycle by one-third. <br />- Do not permit a worker to wear a semi-permeable or impermeable garment when <br />his/her oral temperature exceeds 100.6 °F (38.1 °C). <br />Procedures for High Heat Conditions and Heat Waves <br />These procedures are additional preventative measures to be implemented when <br />the temperature is > 95° F (35° C). The SSO or designee is responsible for <br />ensuring effective observation and monitoring of employees during periods of high <br />heat by implementing one or more of the following procedures: <br />1. SSO or designee will supervise 20 or fewer employees. <br />2. The “Buddy System” is mandatory. Conduct routine checks for early signs of <br />Heat Illness. Set and verify routine consumption of water & sports drinks in a 3:1 <br />ratio. <br />Rev 8 13 June 2019
