The hazardous characteristics of the wastes are
those of ignitability, reactivity, corrosivity and/or toxicity.
Hazardous wastes will usually be in containers (55-gallon drums, IBCs
or portable tanks of 500 gallons or less), and they will either be in
transit through the facility (on site for only several days) or, for specially
permitted facilities, in storage in a specially designed storage facility
with a secondary containment system. The types of hazardous wastes
that may be present are:
EPA WASTE CODE HAZARDOUS CHARACTERISTIC
F001 TOXIC
F002 TOXIC
F003 TOXIC & IGNITABLE
F005 IGNITABLE
D001 IGNITABLE
D002 CORROSIVE
U002-U239 TOXIC and/or IGNITABLE
Spills of hazardous wastes should be contained using sand and other
inert adsorbents. Clean-up of the spill should be conducted in the same
manner described above for their non-waste equivalents. Persons
coming into contact with a spilled hazardous waste should remove
contaminated clothing and wash thoroughly with soap and water.
Obtain medical attention as soon as possible.
