Results of SJVAPCD 2009 Compost VOC Emissions Study
Aeration Floors and Extended Aerated Static Piles
Aerated static pile compost methods previously presented in the Project Description discussed
on-grade aeration systems applied to compost windrows.
An alternative to the at grade aeration system is an aeration floor, where the aeration system is
built into a slab upon which the compost feedstock is placed. Although capital costs are higher
for floor aeration systems, durability is high and collection of liquids is facilitated. An image of
an aeration floor system is shown in Figure 3. The aeration floor can be operated with either
positive or negative aeration.
To make more effective use of available space, another pile configuration called the extended
aerated pile has been developed. Studies indicate that the area required for an extended pile is
about SO% less than that for an individual pile. Extended piles consist of individual cells that are
stacked against each other. Cells of new feedstock are constructed in one pile, and cells of
nearing mature compost are placed in other. Extended aerated static piles also increase the
emissions control achieved with a layer of finished compost as the adjacent cells of feedstock
support the finished cover layer of the adjoining cell, minimizing sloughing of the compost
layer. The use of an aeration floor facilitates implementation of extended aerated static piles.
In the case of negative aeration, the exhaust gases are subject to biofiltration.
TRACY MRF/TS & CF would like to have the flexibility to use aeration floors and extended static
piles, subject to Local Enforcement Agency and San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District
approval and conditions.
