FIELD PROCEDURES
All field procedures will be overseen by an AGI representative under the supervision of a
California Professional Geologist. Procedures for boring advancement, sample collection
and analyses, and boring abandonment are described below.
5.1. SOIL BORING ADVANCEMENT
AGI proposes to advance fifteen (15) soil borings in and around the former location of
trench T-29. Soil borings will be advanced to total depths of 10 feet bsg utilizing a
Geoprobe direct -push drilling rig equipped with 1.85 -inch diameter hollow probing rods
advanced inside 3.25 -inch diameter outer casing. The Geoprobe advances soil probe
borings using a hydraulic hammer to drive sampling tools to specified depths. Borings will
be advanced in a grid -like pattern comprising approximately 2,400 square feet
surrounding T-29. Borings will be advanced east to west evenly spaced approximately
15 feet apart and north to south evenly spaced approximately 20 feet apart.
Proposed boring locations are illustrated in Figure 3.
5.2. SOIL SAMPLING AND ANALYSES
Soil samples and waste samples (if encountered) will be collected from the borings using
a Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with 1.85 -inch diameter five-foot long acetate
liners. Soil samples will be collected continuously between the surface and the total depth
of all borings. Soil and waste encountered in the borings will be visually classified by AGI
personnel in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) or type of
materials encountered. Additionally, soil samples will be field screened for the presence
of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using an organic vapor meter (OVM) equipped
with a photo -ionization detector (PID) calibrated to isobutylene.
Upon sample retrieval, the acetate sleeve will be cut open to expose the entire soil core
to classify the soil and inspect the core for waste. If waste is not encountered during the
investigation, soil samples will not be preserved for analysis.
If waste is encountered during the investigation, soil samples be collected beneath waste
by hand -packing soil into precleaned and certified 4 -oz, Teflon -lined closure, wide-mouth
clear glass sample containers (sample jars) and 2 -inch by 3 -inch steel sample sleeves.
The ends of the sleeves will be covered with Teflon sheets, capped, and sealed with Duct
tape. All sample containers will be labeled with soil boring location, depth, time, date, and
sampler's initials and then placed in a container with sufficient ice and transported under
