GENERAL - INPORDikT I ON <br />CALIFOPdTIA FREESTONE PEACH ASSOCIATION <br />r;The California Freestone Peach Associz}.tion is a <br />,non-profit agricultural cooperative association <br />which was incorporated April 8, 1953. <br />}i 9 <br />The need. had been felt :for some years for a bar- <br />gaining. associa:Vi-an to represent':freestone peaches <br />in order t.o provide more stability to prices re- <br />ceived bythe growers .-in return for their inest- <br />ment in land, capitol and labor. After a series <br />hof meetings in'the' miajor producing areas of the <br />state 9 rzemberslzip agreements, proposed ca.nner's <br />contracts, by -Laws and articles of.incorporation` <br />were pre pared., <br />L. T. Powell:;, Winton, was elected .president nd i 4: <br />served continously in that capacity. until Fe+bruary, <br />1959; when he wk's s?zcceeded by George Crum, <br />Winters. Offices were opened' in Modesto in 1954 <br />and Charles Telford wEs employed as fullt me. <br />manager, a position ,I)e still holds. Richard <br />Black, Denair, - ilq.assistant mane.ger. and Alice <br />Warden, off ice &a�nf ager, , of t3ie organization. <br />arlforni-a Freestone Peach' -Association is composed . <br />tdf.,six districts. Ee'm bers in these districts <br />annually elect- fifteen' <br />growers to the board of <br />!directors, three of these being "directors at <br />la.rge". The board of directors in turn_ elect the <br />.standing committees and hire the management and <br />staff. Each district also elects a district <br />advisory board which acts as liaison -between the <br />board and members in their- area. <br />Income is derived from two sources:_ a service <br />charge of 81.25 per tonis paid. by processors on <br />'tlfyoririagey pizrchas;d by themhrou,gh the asso- <br />ciation; and sums withheld from the sales <br />proceeds of member's fruit. <br />Affiliations: Agricultural Cour.cil of California <br />41NationalCouncil of Far -:mer.
