Water Quality Monitoring Report
First Quarter 2024
www.arcadis.com
Forward Landfill 1Q24 Water Quality Mon Report_05012024 7
2.2 Unsaturated Zone Monitoring
This section describes the monitoring conducted within the vadose zone of the Forward Unit during first quarter
2024 and the associated monitoring results.
2.2.1 Monitoring Program
The current unsaturated zone monitoring network at the Forward Unit consists of 10 lysimeters, including seven
suction lysimeters and three pan lysimeters. The current unsaturated zone monitoring network at the Austin Road
Unit consists of 16 lysimeters, including 11 suction lysimeters and five pan lysimeters. The lysimeter locations are
shown on Figure 1.
Samples are collected quarterly from each sampleable lysimeter if soil pore liquids are present during the
monitoring event and are analyzed as presented in Table 1. Supplemental analyses are conducted every 5 years,
as presented in Table 1, and typically are conducted in the first quarter; however, the 5-year analyses conducted
in 2023 occurred in May (second quarter). The next 5-year analyses will be conducted in the third quarter 2028.
2.2.2 Quarterly Results
Field inspection results for the 26 lysimeters at the Site are shown on the field data sheets provided in Appendix
B. All but four of the lysimeters were dry or contained insufficient soil pore liquids for sampling. Only one suction
lysimeter (LY-W-2) at the Forward Unit contained sufficient liquid for analyses of VOCs. Three suction lysimeters
(FU-04W-B, FU-06-B, and LY-POND-N) at the Austin Road Unit contained sufficient liquid for analyses of VOCs.
Analytical results for the sampled lysimeter are presented in Table 9. The following VOCs were detected in the
lysimeter samples:
LY-W-2. 2-Butanone (greater than PQL), acetone (greater than PQL), and TBA (greater than PQL).
FU-04W-A. TBA (greater than PQL).
FU-06-B. Benzene (greater than MDL).
2.3 Leachate Monitoring, Seep Monitoring, and Leachate
Collection and Removal System Testing
This section describes the leachate and seep monitoring activities, the leachate collection and removal system
(LCRS) testing conducted at the Site during first quarter 2024, and the associated monitoring results.
2.3.1 Leachate Monitoring
Leachate samples are collected quarterly from the Forward Unit basin, the compost area retention basin, and the
Austin Road Unit holding area. Quarterly leachate monitoring includes field analyses for pH, specific conductance,
temperature, and turbidity, as well as laboratory analyses for inorganic parameters (Table 1).
