Baker, Lydia [EHD]
From: Baker, Lydia [EHD]
Sent: Thursday, October 26, 2023 3:50 PM
To: Daryl Charles
Subject: Food Handler Card
Hello Darrell,
I got your message regarding the food handler card. Here is a guide about who needs a food handler card:
https://www.sigov.org/docsidefa u It-sou rce/envi ronmenta I-hea lth-docu mentsifood-and-restau ra ntsica I iforn ia-food-
handler-card-requirements.pdf?sfvrsn=fd7a47f5 3
You are correct that if you are operating at a temporary event or a farmer's market you would not need a food handler
card. However, it is a requirement for a Cottage Food Operation permit. So for the cottage food permit you will need
it. Depending on what you are doing at the commercial kitchen would determine if you need it for that. If it is strictly
prepping for only the farmer's market or a temporary event (asparagus festival, county fair, etc.) then you would not
need a food handler's card. If you are doing anything else like catering you would need the food manager certification
and anyone else would need a food handler's card. If you are doing the sea moss jellies then you would need a permit
from the state and they may require the food handler or manager certification. I'm not sure what their requirements
are. You can find out here:
https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CEH/DFDCS/Pages/FDBPrograms/FoodSafetyProgram/ProcessedFoodRegistration.a
spx
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best Regards,
Lydia Baker
Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist
San Joaquin County I Environmental Health Department
1868 E.
