Effects from an acute exposure typically occur
rapidly. They can last from a few minutes to several hours and are typically reversible. By
contrast, effects of a chronic exposure occur after repeated long‐term exposure and are
typically irreversible.
As an example, if you inhale solvent vapors for a short period while using a solvent, you
might suffer a headache or nausea, but no other permanent health effects from short‐term
exposure. But if you have repeated exposure over months or years to the solvent, thereby
leading to an accumulation of the chemicals in your body, the cumulative effect can result
in central nervous system symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, and memory impairment.
13
