In some cases, manufacturers will also display an NFPA diamond on containers of
hazardous chemicals.
The diamond is actually a "square‐on‐point" shape that contains four differently colored
diamonds. The blue diamond indicates health hazards, the red diamond indicates
flammability hazards, the yellow diamond indicates instability hazards, and the white
diamond indicates special hazards.
The health, flammability, and instability hazards identified in the blue, red, and yellow
diamonds will be indicated by a number between zero and four. Zero indicates no hazard,
one indicates low hazard, two indicates moderate hazard, three indicates high hazard, and
four indicates maximum hazard. The white diamond will not include a number but may
include one of three different symbols that identify special hazards. “OX” identifies
oxidizing substances, “SA” identifies gases that are simple asphyxiants, and “W [with a line
through it]” identifies materials that are water‐reactive.
While the NFPA diamond does not identify the name of the chemical, the numbers in the
blue, red, and yellow diamonds and any special hazards indicated in the white diamond will
indicate potential physical and health hazards.
16
